Aditi Machado’s WRIT 1122 class studied evaluation culture: how we’re constantly reviewing our experiences, from Facebook likes and Uber ratings to traditional genres of reviewing. This WRIT 1122 class defined the TV episode recap as a relatively new genre developing out of the movie or book review. Only, the audience tends to have watched the episode already and is looking for analysis more so than evaluation. Since this genre embraces multimodal strategies like screenshots, gifs, and other audio/visual clips, the students wrote or performed their recaps of Season 1 Episode 2 of the show Black Mirror as blog posts, podcasts, and vlogs.
