Tips for Dating

ASSIGNMENT: From the 1940s to the 1980s, schools would show social guidance and information films. Some dealt with serious topics, such as 1951’s Duck and Cover (a movie about nuclear holocaust) and 1964’s Red Asphalt (a movie that showed gruesome traffic collision footage in order to scare young drivers). Many dealt with issues such as social graces and dating. By the 1980s, social education in school was abandoned. The Internet, specifically YouTube, has seen a resurgence in documentary shorts that explain how to do something—including, dating. In this assignment, students worked in teams to produce a modern dating video similar to the social guidance videos of yesteryear.  They were given few constraints and could write, direct, and star in the video in any way they chose. The objectives of the assignment were to increase their rhetorical versatility in reaching a public audience of their age.
